Common problems with soy wax candles

2025-06-11 15:28

1. Uneven surface of soy wax candles (dents, cracks)

Reasons:

Cooling too fast (such as low ambient temperature or too strong ventilation).

Large temperature difference between soy wax and container (such as pouring wax into a cold container at too high a temperature).

Natural characteristics of soy wax (higher shrinkage than paraffin).

Solution:

Keep the environment warm (around 25°C) when pouring soy wax liquid, and avoid direct ventilation.

Preheat the container (such as slightly heating with a hair dryer).

Fill the dents with a second pouring.

2. Uneven burning of soy wax (tunnel effect)

Reasons:

Insufficient first burning time (no complete wax pool formed).

The candle wick is too small or the melting point of the wax is too high.

Solution:

Make sure the first burning lasts for 2-3 hours until the soy wax liquid melts to the edge.

Choose a suitable candle wick (such as cotton wick or wood wick, which needs to be tested according to the candle diameter).

Avoid placing it at the vent.

3. Soy candle wick problems (black smoke, mushroom head, extinguished)

Reason:

Wick is too long, resulting in incomplete combustion.

Incompatible essential oils or dyes are added to the soy wax.

Solution:

Trimming the wick regularly to about 6mm in length.

Use special candle dyes and low-smoke essential oils (recommended addition amount ≤5%).

4. Weak fragrance diffusion of soy wax

Reason:

Insufficient proportion of essential oil added or high temperature volatilization.

The melting point of soy wax is high (such as the melting point of pure soy wax is about 49-54℃), and the fragrance is released slowly when burned at low temperature.

Solution:

Add 6-8% fragrance load (compatibility needs to be tested).

Mixed with beeswax or coconut wax to lower the melting point and enhance the release of fragrance.

5. Soy Wax oil seeps or changes color

Reason:

High temperature environment causes wax to soften (soy wax is more sensitive).

Essential oils or dyes are not fully mixed.

Solution:

Store in a cool place (avoid sunlight or heating).

When adding soy wax, stir for 2-3 minutes to ensure even mixing.

6. Difficulty demoulding candles (molds)

Reason:

The mold is not coated with release agent or the wax has not shrunk enough.

Solution:

Use silicone molds or spray release agent.

Freeze for 10 minutes to help demold.

7. "Frosting" after storage

Reason:

Natural crystallization of soy wax, does not affect use.

Solution:

Choose soy wax with low crystallization rate (such as Golden Brands 464).

Reheat the surface (slight repair with heat gun)
